Tottenham Hotspur brought Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City squad crashing  back to earth today, thrashing them 2-0 at White Hart Lane in London.

It was City’s first loss of the season after  a  perfect six-of-six start.

But a chink in their armour was first indicated in City’s 3-3 draw during the week in the Champions League against less fancied Celtic.

City came to White Hart Lane probably thinking they could rewrite their form book.

But an error by defender Aleksandar Kolarov, who scored an own goal in the 9th minute put the host ahead.

In the 37th minute, Dele Alli scored the second goal for Spurs and created a chance for his team’s third goal in the second half after he was fouled in the box  by Fernandinho in the second half.

But Eric Lamela who took the spot kick, played into the hands of City’s goalkeeper.

Despite the late efforts by City to find the net, Spurs kept tight to their lead and pegged City’s lead in the table to one point.

Spurs are now second with 17 points, while City have 18.

Arsenal who play Burnley later today have the chance to go third, if they win the away game.

In the  other match Sunday afternoon, Southampton held champions Leicester to a goalless draw.
