The chairmen of the three lower leagues in Nigeria have called for the conduct of elections into the boards of various leagues to guarantee professionalism.

The chairmen after their meeting in Abuja on Thursday urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to urgently organise elections into the boards of the Nigeria National League (NNL), the Nigeria Women League and the Nigeria Nationwide League.

Aliyu Salman who read the communiqué of the meeting to newsmen said the call became necessary to ensure transparency and accountability in the administration of the leagues.

Salman also said that the call for elections into the boards of the leagues would ensure the preservation of achievements of the previous boards.

The Chairman of NNL, Abdul Sule, noted that the absence of elected boards affected the quality and achievements of the three leagues in the outgoing league season.

“We noted that since the three leagues are each a limited liability company, it is only their directors (the clubs) that can determine who governs them, just like what obtains in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

“The absence of properly constituted boards for the three leagues actually affected the quality of the 2015/2016 football league season.

“We call on the NFF to as a matter of urgency, constitute or have elections conducted into the boards of the three leagues, in line with the resolutions and mandate reached by the congresses of the three leagues at their 2016 annual congresses,” the chairmen said in a communiqué.

The chairmen however commended the NFF and the League Management Company (LMC) for the support given to the three leagues this season.

They also urged the NFF to delay the final of the Federation Cup by one week to enable the leagues complete their matches for the season.
