Ex-Unilag VC urges FG to upgrade Polytechnic and College of education

A don, Prof Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe, on Friday urged the Federal Government to upgrade the nation’s polytechnics and College of education in order to have access to quality education at all levels.

Ibidapo-Obe gave advice at the 15th Matriculation Ceremony of the Covenant University, Ota, Ogun, for 2016/2017 Academic Session.

The Lecture had as it’s theme ”Attaining Global Relevance and National Socio-Economic Advancement through University Education.”

A total of 2051 students which includes 1800 undergraduates and 151 postgraduate students graduated.

According to him, the upgrade of the polytechnics and Colleges of education would offer the nation more degrees that would improve technical man power that would help build the economy of the country.

The don explained that access and quality of education had been major challenge in the nation’s Institution.

”Parents want their wards to go to universities to have a career but there are not enough space to accommodate all the admission seekers,”

Ibidapo-Obe attributed underfunded by the Federal Government as myriad of challenges hindered infrastructure development in the universities.

He noted that the quality of education was not falling but the standard was arising because most of out graduates that went to others country excelled at their various fields.

Ibidapo-Obe, however, advised the Federal to Government to be disciplined and tackling corruption in the country.

:’Corruption has been bane to infrastructure development in the nation’s universities because the money that supposed to be used in building infrastructure were Embezzled by the leaders.” he said.

He stressed the need for the Federal Government to invest more in educational system if the country would be global relevance and became one of the top 20 economy by 2020.

Dr David Oyedepo, the Chancellor of the Institution, said that everybody believed that the greatest African was leadership.

Oyedepo said the university came into existence as result of passion for change which involves revolution in education.

The Chancellor said that sound education was a sure foundation of every great nation.

He noted that the problem of the nation was not religious but those leaders running the affairs of the country.

Earlier Prof. Aaron Atayero, Vice-Chancellor of the Institution, said the Matriculation offered the university to inject new  materials into our unique production line of raising a new generation of leaders for continent and the world.

Atayero congratulates the new students because out of the numerous candidates that applied for admission.

He also commended the parents for making the right decision to bring their wards to the university, an institution on threshold of making history as one of the top ten leading universities in the world by 2022.
