Late Shehu Shagari

Federal Government has been asked to rename the International Conference Centre, ICC, Abuja after the late former President, Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari “as part of ways to immortalise the departed leader”.

Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria, MMWG gave the advice in s statement issued by its national coordinator, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi and made available to our correspondent in Abuja.

Shagari died after a brief illness on Friday, December 28, 2018 at the National Hospital, Abuja at the age of 93.

The statement explained that it has become “very necessary to immortalise the great national leader who started serving the nation since 1951 (.i.e. before the nation’s independence in 1960)”.

“He (Shagari) also impressed the nation with his humility, religious commitment, political tolerance, purposeful and detribalised leadership virtues.

“Even though he served Nigeria as 1st Executive President for 51 months, he was never caught or named in any corruptive activity whatsoever. He stands tall as a leader of exemplary character forever.

“These virtues are what we want our leaders and aspiring leaders in Nigeria of today to emulate”, the group stressed.

It would be recalled that Shagari was the Second Republic President from October 1, 1979 to December 31, 1983 when his administration was overthrown by the military through a coup d’etat.
