Court remands 32yr-old man in prison over alleged fraud, impersonation



An High Court sitting in Ilorin on Thursday ordered the remand of a 32 year-old impersonator of Col. Hamid Ali (rtd), the Comptroller of Nigeria Customs Service, Mr. Yakub Afolayan, in prison custody.

ROYAL NEWS gathered that the accused person who is a residence of No.75, Isale Koko area, Ojagboro Ilorin, was arrested and charged on four count charges.

Justice M. Abdulgafar ordered that the accused person be remanded in prison custody, and adjourned the case until March 19, for trial. Although, he pleaded not guilty to the charges. READ ALSO: SAD….Drunk driver kills 400L Engineering student

Abdulgafar made the order on the request of the Counsel to the EFCC, Mr. Andrew Akoja, who had pleaded for the accused person to be remanded in prison custody for committing a four count charge offence.

In addition, he had earlier told the court that the accused person was arrested on March 8, and the case was filed on March 11, as the accused had the intention to defraud and obtain huge sum of money from innocent citizens. READ ALSO: 3 Civil Servants to forfeit N264 worth property

According to him, “Between the month of November 2018 and January 2019, the accused person had collected a sum of N267,000 from one Usman Opeyemi, through his UBA account number; 2102612639, to secure a job for her son with the Nigeria Custom Service.

“Under false pretense, between June and August 2018, the accused also obtained a sum of N133,000 from one Gambari Tajudeen, through the same Bank account number, to secure employment for him, with the Nigeria Custom Service. “He dishonestly used as genuine, a forged document, by presenting it to Gambari Tajudeen, titled Nigeria Custom Service Application Form.”

He further maintained that, “In June 2018, the accused person made a false document, titled Nigeria Custom Service Application Form, purportedly emanating from the Nigeria Custom Service, which he knew to be false. READ ALSO: 25 million Nigerians suffer from kidney diseases

“The accused person thereby committed an offence, contrary to section 1(a) of the advance fee fraud and other related offences Act 2006 and punishable under section 1(3) of the same Act.”

He noted that the accused person also committed an offence, contrary to section 362 and 366 and punishable under section 364 of the penal code law.
