The Federal Government has officially inaugurated the Planning Committee for the hosting of the 61st meeting of United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Commission for Africa (CAF).

The Inauguration by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Muhammad , on Tuesday is to kick-start the preparation of the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture’s preparation for the hosting of the event which is billed to hold from 4th to 6th of June.

According to the Minister, “Today’s inauguration kick-starts our preparation for the hosting of theevent. The task ahead of us is enormous, but with the quality membership of the Planning Committee, we are up to the task and will host a successful event.

“The meeting, which has the theme, ”Tourism Statistics: A Catalyst for Development”, is scheduled to hold at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, from 4th to 6th June 2018.”

Muhammad charged the committee to be of high level effectiveness and commitment towards ensuring the success of the meeting.

“Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, your acceptance to serve in this committee bears witness to the importance of tourism and its effect on many other sectors. Tourism, therefore, is an essential part of our economy which has spin-offs in the areas of trade, hospitality, agriculture, the cultural and creative industries, transport, construction, etc. It is an industry in its own right, which creates added value throughout globally.

“The success of the 61st UNWTO/CAF meeting rests on the effectiveness and commitment of this noble committee. It is in this context that you must, therefore, measure the importance and level of responsibility attached to your membership of the committee.

“Of course, your committee will be assisted by seven sub-committees covering Venue andAccommodation; Media/Publicity; Protocol, Security and Logistics; Transport and Security; Ceremonial, Secretariat and Finance.

“You have been selected based on your knowledge and expertise in content, logistics and planning. Your role is to execute a successful event with professional inputs and assistance from the Ministry and the UNWTO. I have no doubt that you will take your assignments very seriously,” he said.

ROYAL NEWS reports that Nigeria won the hosting right by acclamation following the presentation of a five-minute video, entitled ”Simply Nigeria”, which highlighted Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and tourism destinations to delegates at the ongoing 59th edition of the UNWTO CAF Meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed in April 2016.
