Dr Jabbi Kilgori, outgoing Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education in Sokoto State, has urged incoming commissioner, the first female professor in the state, Prof. A’isha Madawaki, to use her status to raise girls’ school enrollment in the state.
Kilgori, who was moved to Ministry for Higher Education, made the call on Friday when the newly appointed commissioner reported, ahead of formal handing over of official activities.
He challenged Madawaki to encourage girls’ education, stressing that it was worrisome that girls’ population had decreased at higher classes across the state.
He said “we recorded massive enrollment of girls from primary one to four but after reaching certain age, most girls were being withdrawn from schools for one reason or the other.
“However, an advocacy campaign and community involvement initiative is in progress to curb
the trend with active support from the Sultanate Council, chaired by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III.”
“You should prepare to supervise about 2,500 schools scattered in urban and rural areas, with about 800,000 students and 20,000 teachers.”
He said the introduction of Conditional cash Transfer (CCT) Scheme where 10,120 girls currently receive N15,000 annually in 600 selected schools in 23 local government areas of the state had facilitated more girls enrollment.
He explained that school shifting arrangements were made in some schools to facilitate smooth transit from primary to secondary schools and to accommodate more students by both primary and secondary school students to maximise space.
“The school shift arrangement where a section of students attend classes in the morning while others
go in the afternoon in communities with high population of students with minimum classes is to maximise space,” he said.
Kilgori added that efforts to integrate Qur’anic schools into modern school system were also on course with support from donor agencies.
Responding, Madawaki expressed joy over the achievements and pledged to live up to the expectations in pursuing the programmes, as well as many others according to government intentions.
She described her posting as home coming, saying she once spent years on sabbatical at the ministry, adding that Dr Kilgori had been her guide and hoped he would continue to assist her as they were still within reach.
Alhaji Mamman Sani and Hajiya Asama’u Maikano, who led community delegation to usher Madawaki into the office offered prayers for guidance and enjoined workers to support her.
Sani said the delegation was on solidarity with Madawaki and commended Gov. Aminu Tambuwal for the appointment.
He described Madawaki as suitable for the post, “considering her contributions to many communities and Sokoto State.”
